GEMTEC EXHIBITION WITH SYMPOSIUM – HARD BRITTLE COMPETENCE CLUSTER Perspectives and challenges in the processing of hard brittle materials The cultural history of gemstones is also a history of processing technology. Techniques such as sawing, drilling and grinding as well as coloring hard natural materials have become the basis of what is now a broad-based industry that offers a comprehensive range of processing technology for hard, brittle materials. On this basis, an outstanding competence cluster of nationally and internationally successful companies has emerged around Idar-Oberstein and linked to the jewelry and gemstone industry. The Idar-Oberstein trade fair, in cooperation with the Koblenz Chamber of Industry and Commerce and WFG BIR mbH, is bringing this impressive development to INTERGEM for the second time. The experience in grinding gemstones and the associated knowledge of the influences of different process parameters lead to an enormous competence advantage of the industrial companies in the Upper Nahe region when it comes to machines and tools and thus also when processing hard, brittle materials, such as grinding. Numerous companies from the region have now successfully positioned themselves on the market with unique selling points in the processing of ceramic materials, optical glass, semiconductor materials and ferrites. In addition to the exhibiting companies, top-class experts from science and practice will speak about the perspectives and challenges of processing hard, brittle materials as part of the accompanying GemTec symposium . A particular focus is on design and creation options.
